Finally finished the picture requested months ago by my good friend Lucas Twyman of a Legend of the Five Rings character he created. I couldn't think of anything interesting for the background, sorry. It looks pretty strange to me actually. The dragon was inspired by Tenjou Tenge and Bahamut from Final Fantasy. That dragon sucked the life out of my drawing hand. Done on OpenCanvas 2 as always. The following description is not written by me.

===================================

Based on characters by Rich Wulf and Lucas Twyman:

Appearance and Character Notes: Iyoku, also known as The Straw Dog, is a ronin, a lean and vicious killer. He is very tall for Rokugani, and his hair is typically unkempt. He has a long face and a constant smirk. He seems quick to laughter and has a gruff, dry wit, and his attention constantly seems to wander. When preparing for battle, or when he thinks someone might be able to help him with his ultimate goal (finding the sword that he believes to be his father's blade), his manner changes dramatically. He becomes as focused and driven as he was before seemingly inattentive. He has a slight scar down the left side of his face; he recieved it in the illegal duel against a Phoenix samurai, and was expelled from the clan for slaying said samurai in the duel. Like most Dragons, he has tattoos; in his case, the two kanji for "Straw Dog" (a reference to a saying by Shinsei [taken from the real life philosopher Lao-Tzu]) is etched down his back. A shard of metal (actually a broken shard of the cursed sword Yashin) always hangs from his neck. A master of the two-sword Daisho technique, he rarely wears armor, due to the difficulty of finding armor to fit his tall frame, the problems of a ronin transporting armor, and his desire for maximum mobility for his seemingly wild style. He wears a brown, worn kimono with no mon, and simple obi, but only his katana is his - he carries the wakizashi of the last foe he defeated, carrying their honor with him until he finds a new blade, or the weapon his father reforged.

Iyoku was formerly Mirumoto Iyoku, a samurai of the Dragon Clan and bastard son of a lesser-known ronin hero of the Clan Wars. While his mother was reprimanded for the transgression of his birth, Iyoku was adopted into the family by his aunt and uncle and raised as their son. He was an incredibly energetic child, and was famous for his unending love of asking questions. When he entered the Mirumoto bushi school, he was expected to fail due to his erratic and inattentive manner. The opposite was true. In the blade, Iyoku found a certainty and beauty that gave him focus. Previously considered clumsy due to his extended frame, he found that his height gave him an advantage with the two-swords technique of the Dragon Clan. He was not the fastest or the strongest bushi, but he was considered among the most promising students of the school due to his efficient, unerring technique. Encouraged by his training, he took the name Iyoku ("Worldly Ambition") at his gempukku - a symbol of his ambition to represent his clan - and, after a solid showing at the yearly Topaz Championship dueling tournament, was promoted swiftly to a prestigious post among the Imperial Guard. At his gempukku, Iyoku's mother (who he then believed to be his elder cousin) presented him with a gift: a shard of a blade given to her by the one man she truly loved. She gave it to him in the hopes that it would bring him luck. Little did she know that the shard was actually one of the pieces of the shattered bloodsword Yashin (Ambition), a weapon of terrible power and evil that drove one man to stage a coup on the Emperor, shaping the destiny of the Empire - and another to madness.

Everything changed when war broke out between the Dragon and the Phoenix clans. Iyoku, in his fervor to prove his strength and the strength of the Dragon, blackmailed or shamed several of his fellow Imperial Guardsmen who belonged to the Phoenix Clan. He managed to project the facade of the impartial, honorable Guardsman, and his superiors believed he was fostering peace when, in fact, he was fomenting conflict between the two clans. He was given promotions and glory, until a crafty young samurai named Shiba Torikaga uncovered the truth behind his machinations - and the truth behind his lineage. Testimony from Iyoku's own grandfather was uncovered, stating that Iyoku was the son of the Ronin known as Sanzo, a man driven to chase his own death in a quest for vengeance for his slain family. It was Sanzo who reforged Yashin into a wakizashi and was driven mad by it. Enraged, Iyoku called out Torikaga, cutting him down but also being wounded during the duel. Since the duel was illegal, there was nothing Iyoku could do but leave or be killed. Iyoku became a ronin, and now wanders Rokugan looking for the blade that could find the truth behind his history:

The strongest of the evil smith Yajinden's creations, a cursed blade that tasted the blood of the last three Emperors.

A weapon doomed to corrupt its wielder.

The bloodsword Ambition.

:iconanikachan:
Wow, this is just amazing... I completely admire your patience.
:iconmr-mister:
thank you, but i feel bad it took me so long to do.
:iconbratchny:
Well. Mindblowing as always, Minh :D
The only tiny thing I find a bit 'off' is the 'straw dog' characters on his hand. They kind of look like they're not a part of his skin.
But that doesn't take away from the awesomeness of this painting. I can tell that the dragon slayed you! haha ;P
I love the shine everywhere, especially on the woman's hair. And Iyoku's kimono looks great. The creases are perfectly shaped.
His tattoos on his chest are well painted, too. I love how they shine when the light catches them, and then darken when they're in a shadow.
Oh oh and I can see his scar! Very nice detail. You've captured Iyoku's personality perfectly. (I had to taks some time to read the short story, lol)
Well done Minh...you own me a lot :D

Oh..and this deserves a :+favlove:, because of all the effort and the storyline, and just the greatness. Very historical.

wow! i loves the tatoo things, they look like they are glowing. and that dragon is awesome! i really love the coloring and she shading...it's like...it looks like an oil painting. and it's so cool that you do this amazing art in opencanvas! (could i pester you for some event files sometime? if you have any? maybe i could learn something ;D)
:iconmr-mister:
thanks tons for taking the time to look and comment! the reason the tattoos look glowy are cuz they're on an addition layer :) the event file for this one is a monstrosity, it's like 7MB i think. but yea i'll upload some event files and send you a link to them... tomorrow though cuz i'm exhausted and need to sleep! thanks again
:iconmr-mister:
lozzy dear, you are right as always. the hands do indeed suck. in fact, his arms gave me a lot of problems, i don't like them at all. the kimono sleeve made it hard to do arms. or i just suck :D but i put in a huge ass hand-numbing dragon to distract people from the ugly hands! hehe you're too clever for that though ;) thanks for all the support dear!
